Recording Money That Came In

Use Money came in when the business receives income from its work or other business-income activity. For example, if a customer pays the business $500 for completed work, record $500 with Money came in.

Record business income

Open Add transaction, choose Money came in, and enter the amount and date. Choose the bank or cash account where the money was deposited, then choose what the money was for, such as Sales & service income.

If you genuinely cannot determine the income category, choose Money received / Not sure. The transaction will be available under Needs Review in Transactions so you can revisit it later.

A deposit is not always income

Do not normally use Money came in for:

  • personal money the owner puts into the business — use Owner money in;
  • borrowed money — use the Loan workflow; or
  • money transferred from another business bank or cash account — use Move money.

Those events increase a bank balance, but they do not represent income earned by the business. Choosing the matching workflow keeps income and profit from being overstated.
