Recording Credit Card Payments

Buying something with a business credit card and paying the credit-card bill are two different events.

First: record the purchase

Suppose the business buys $100 of office supplies with its credit card. Use Money went out, enter $100, choose the business credit card under Paid with, and select Office supplies.

That transaction records the $100 expense and increases the amount owed on the card.

Later: record the card payment

When the business pays $100 from checking to the card, open Add transaction, choose Move money, and then choose Pay a credit card. Enter $100, select checking under Paid from, and select the credit card under Paid to.

The payment reduces checking and reduces the card balance. It does not create another expense. Recording both the original purchase and the later card payment as expenses would count the same $100 expense twice.

If the card already had an amount owed before you began using Trio Ledger, add the card in Accounts and enter its Starting amount owed. Then record new card purchases and payments as they happen.
